"During the public pronouncement of the appeal judgment the appeals chamber confirmed his conviction and affirmed Mr Praljak's sentence of 20 years of imprisonment".

"Slobodan Praljak is not a war criminal".

Croatian state TV said Slobodan Praljak, 72, a former commander in Bosnia's 1992-95 war, appeared to drink from a small bottle moments after judges at the worldwide criminal tribunal in The Hague reconfirmed a 20-year sentence.

Right after his sentence of 20 years in prison for crimes in the Bosnian city of Mostar was upheld, 72-year-old Slobodan Praljak, shouted out: "Praljak is not a criminal".

Croatia's state-run TV service later said he died in hospital in the Netherlands, a statement which was later confirmed by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, who offered condolences to his family.

The judge immediately ordered the court to be taken into private session and the proceedings were suspended, the BBC reported.

The tribunal, which last week convicted former Bosnian Serb military chief General Ratko Mladic of genocide and other crimes, was set up in 1993, while fighting still raged in the former Yugoslavia. "We voice dissatisfaction and regret about the verdict".

A Bosnian Croat wartime commander has died after drinking poison during an appeals hearing at a United Nations court, Croatia's prime minister has confirmed.

The UN war tribunal found that despite his being informed of what was happening, Praljak failed to make serious efforts to stop soldiers from rounding up Muslims in Prozor in the summer of 1993.

"There was a preliminary test of the substance in the container and all I can say for now is that there was a chemical substance in that container that can cause death".
In fact, he was a Bosnian Croat commander with a militia operating in Bosnia. "Please, the curtains. Don't take away the glass that he used when he drank something", Agius said.

At the same time, Dutch police have declared the courtroom where Praljak drank poison a crime scene.

Several emergency rescue workers rushed into the building carrying equipment in backpacks, while court officials called for calm. Please drop your comment!
