With his ties to Ferrari through the Ferrari Driver Academy in addition to his confirmed role as a full-time driver for Sauber, the team that signed a technical partnership with Ferrari for 2018, in his rookie Formula One season, Leclerc is among the lead candidates to replace Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari in the 2019 season.

The white-and-red scheme, reflecting Alfa Romeo's colours, marks a move away from the predominantly blue livery which Sauber has run since 2015.

The promotion of 20-year-old Ferrari protege Leclerc, who is from Monaco, leaves German driver Pascal Wehrlein without a seat, with Williams the only remaining team with a vacancy.

Giovinazzi will be the reserve driver instead, taking part in Friday practice sessions. He was speaking in Milan at an event marking the launch of Sauber's new partnership with Alfa Romeo.

"This agreement with the Sauber F1 team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand", Marchionne said earlier this week.

"The motor we use will be the same one Ferrari use", Marchionne said.

"Now there is the additional benefit that when we sit down at the table to discuss the future of Formula One, we're playing two marques", he told reporters. "First and foremost, I would like to thank Ferrari for their support".

The news was announced Saturday as the team's Formula One vehicle was also unveiled with it's slick red and white colouring with a prominent Alfa Romeo logo.

Ferrari's late founder Enzo also started out racing and managing a team for Alfa Romeo, before setting up on his own in the late 1930s.
