US, allies push for United Nations meeting on North Korea rights abuses

In Washington, meanwhile, an influential Republican lawmaker joined National Security Advisor HR McMaster in warning that time is running out on diplomatic efforts to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

"I think it's increasing every day", McMaster told moderator Bret Baier Saturday afternoon at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, CA.

North Korea's latest missile is believed by experts to be capable of reaching all parts of the continental U.S. Despite its range, though, reports say U.S. officials now believe the missile likely did not survive re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. China is North Korea's only significant ally, but it has grown increasingly frustrated over the North's nuclear and missile tests that have brought a threat of war and chaos to China's northeastern border.

North Korea has said it will detect even the slightest movement by the brigade and launch retaliatory operations.

The exercises come after last week's test-launch by North Korea of its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) yet, though the US-South Korea drills had already been planned.

"The situation clearly proves that the United States and the South Korean puppet war maniacs are just aggressors and provocateurs breaking peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula".

It was nearly 10 times more powerful than the 10-kiloton test carried out by the North previous year, according to South Korean experts. "This would be the most destabilizing development I think in the post-World War II period".

Russian Federation and China have proposed a roadmap for defusing the crisis in the region.

North Korea reacted angrily on Sunday to the air manoeuvres, accusing the US and South Korea of a "grave military provocation" that will "push the already acute situation on the Korean Peninsula to the brink of nuclear war".

Among the high-ranking officials who are expected to attend the event are US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, as well as other foreign ministers and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The United States has 28,500 troops in South Korea as a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War.

A landmark 2014 United Nations report on North Korean human rights concluded that North Korean security chiefs - and possibly Kim himself - should face justice for overseeing a state-controlled system of Nazi-style atrocities.

But analysts remain unconvinced that the North has mastered the technology required to launch and direct a missile, and ensure it survives the hard re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.
