Sacha Baron Cohen was set to play Mercury, but quit after arguments with Queen band members, while Dexter Fletcher was originally set to direct but quit in 2014 over "creative differences". When Sigel had to step in again, the studio chose to terminate Singer (who has a pay-or-play contract) and shut production down until they sorted the mess left by their wayward director. Malek also reportedly filed complaints to Fox, citing Singer's disappearing acts as contributing to his unreliability and overall unprofessionalism.

Fox has halted production on the studio's Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, due to the "unexpected unavailability" of director Bryan Singer.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, Singer had clashed with star Rami Malek on multiple occasions, leading to an altercation that saw the director throw something at his leading man.

Despite being over a year away, one of next year's most anticipated movies was quickly pegged to be already Bryan Singer's Bohemian Rhapsody.

Much of the alleged drama came due to Singer's going missing from the set, with cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel stepping in to helm shooting on several days.

The Usual Suspects director was also co-producing the film, alongside Robert De Niro and Queen stars Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Fox promises a new director will be named soon. The two were said to have settled their differences, but Singer's vanishing act for the past almost two weeks was the final straw for Fox film chair and CEO Stacey Snider, who fired Singer on Monday.

Principal photography on the movie began this past September, and is expected to take about two more weeks to complete. Representatives for Singer did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Things got so bad on set that another source on the film revealed that Singer claims he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder "because of the tensions on the set".

Bohemian Rhapsody is slated for US release December 25, 2018.
