Republican voters don't believe accusations against Roy Moore

Trump to hold rally near Alabama Roy Moore and Doug Jones deadlocked in Alabama Senate race, new poll shows

GOP candidate Roy Moore is ahead of Democrat Doug Jones by 2.5 percentage points, according to the polling average calculated by Real Clear Politics, a considerable tightening since Moore faced allegations of sexual misconduct. It has a 3.8 point margin of error for questions based upon the entire sample and a 4.8 point margin of error for likely voters.

This blanket denial is contrast to national Republican lawmakers, many of whom disavowed Moore in the days after the initial Washington Post report came out, telling the public that they believed the women who had come forward. About nine of of ten Republicans who do not believe the allegations also think the media, Democrats, or people seeking attention or money are behind the allegations. It's another indicator voters might look past sexual misconduct allegations against Moore and put him in office anyway.

Several women have accused Moore of pursuing relationships with them when they were under the age of 18 during the late 1970's and early 1980's when the now-Senate candidate was a district attorney in his 30's.

Moore was leading Democrat Doug Jones 49 to 43 percent among voters likely to cast ballots in the December 12 special election, CBS said. Even so, fifty-three percent of voters said Jones has higher standards of personal moral conduct, compared to 34 percent who said the same about Moore.

The accusations against Moore are much more serious than those against Trump, and, because of his long history as a divisive figure in Alabama, he was already facing a possibly-competitive race before the allegations came out. The Post's poll similarly showed Republicans' disbelief about the allegations, with fewer than one in six Republican-leaning likely voters believing that Moore made unwanted sexual advances against the girls. Eighty percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they trust Moore over Jones on abortion.

Other key Republicans have called for Moore to drop out of the race, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan and two former Republican presidential nominees, Mitt Romney and Senator John McCain.
