After a press conference was held late Monday, we learned that Ken Copeland was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the city's history - That's the reason the police chief says they're not accustomed to this. The suspect allegedly opened fire on the officer shooting several times, according to KSAT ABC12. The officer, who was wearing his protective vest, was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m. After a standoff with the officers called to the scene, the suspect eventually surrendered and was taken into custody with a gunshot would that was not life-threatening.

Chief Stapp said the loss of Officer Copeland is painful for many in the police department. "He worked just about every day off to provide for his kids and because he knows we're shorthanded and need the help".

Mettz, 51, owns the home at 177 Valero Dr., which is in the El Camino Real subdivision in southern San Marcos, off of Old Bastrop Road, according to the Hays County Appraisal District. They described him as a hard-working and well-liked member of the department and said he leaves behind a wife and four children. Cecilia and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the officer's family and to the entire San Marcos Police Department.

A nearby elementary school was placed on lock down and students who were outside at the time waiting to be picked up were brought back inside the building. "There's only a few that really mesh with our environment, and Ken Copeland was so highly respected". "We remember the sacrifices our men and women in law enforcement make every day".
