Over 10000 Staff To Help Weed Out Extremist Content On YouTube

YouTube Will Add More Human Moderators To Stop Its Child Exploitation Problem YouTube boss pledges to step up war on violent extremism with 10000-strong internet police force

Subsequent revelations that YouTube was offering up cartoons featuring what the BBC called "animated violence and graphic toilet humor" added fuel to the controversy.

In an official blog post, Susan Wojcicki hailed the platform for being "a force for creativity, learning and access to information" but warned that "bad actors are exploiting our openness to mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm". It was not immediately clear whether those would be contract workers or actual Googlers.

The addition of more crew to the reviewing panel will help YouTube to provide more data for supply, and improve its machine learning software.

"Human reviewers remain essential to both removing content and training machine learning systems because human judgment is critical to making contextualized decisions on content", declared YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, who explained that "moderators have manually reviewed almost 2m videos for violent extremist content since June, helping train machine-learning systems to identify similar footage in the future", according to the news outlet.

On December 4, Alphabet-owned YouTube announced to expand its team of reviewers to manage extremist, violent content by 2018. Its machine learning systems, which flag 98% of videos removed for violent extremism, now help human reviewers remove almost five times as many videos than they were previously.

In a blog post, Wojcicki said the company was already taking "aggressive action" on comments, and was testing new systems to counter threats that combine human and automated checks.

"We want advertisers to have peace of mind that their ads are running alongside content that reflects their brand's values", she said.

Google is going on a hiring spree to try to stamp out offensive videos and comments on YouTube.

The technology has reviewed and flagged content that would have taken 180,000 people working 40 hours a week to assess, according to Wojcicki.

YouTube is now training its machine-learning technology to tackle other areas including child safety and hate speech.

"It's important we get this right for both advertisers and creators, and over the next few weeks, we'll be speaking with both to hone this approach".
