Former US President Barack Obama can lay claim to having had an impressive year on Twitter - even eclipsing his more-prolific successor in the Oval Office.

Eight months after posting the most viral tweet of the year, Carter Wilkerson is still over 14m retweets short of getting his snack.

No. 1 was a teen seeking free Wendy's nuggets, which has been retweeted more than 3.6 million times. The star's admission that she was "broken" by events was retweeted more than a million times.

Accompanying the quote was a photograph of children of various races peering out a window at a smiling Obama. Earlier this year, it broke the record for most liked tweet ever, with 4.5 million likes. It received 1.2 million retweets, but they capped their donation at $10,000 or 67,000 retweets.

One particular example was pop star Ariana Grande's heartbreaking tweet following a suicide bombing moments after her concert in Manchester, England, in May.

It was also the second most-liked post on the social media platform.

Three tweets by former US leader Obama made it onto Twitter's Top 10 list for this year but there were none from Trump, despite his prolific use of the platform.

Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington died on July 20 - and the band's simple memorial of a photo of Bennington in concert on the day of his death received 787,000 retweets.

The former President's paean to diversity and denunciation of hatred earned spurred almost 4.6 million people to click the small heart icon - the most of any tweet this year.

The blasting by Cleveland Cavaliers star Lebron James of President Donald Trump rocketed around the world after he "rescinded" Stephen Curry's invitation to the White House to celebrate the Golden State Warrior's National Basketball Association championship.

He also came in No. 1 for top tweeted USA elected officials, with Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan taking second and third. But all told, more than half of the top 10 most retweeted had a noticeably somber tone.
