The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has honored 15 vehicles with their Top Safety Pick+ honor.

Also relatively new are the headlight ratings, which were first instituted in March 2016, and the initial results were poor.

To earn the IIHS 2018 Top Safety Pick+ award a vehicle must receive a "Good" rating for five tests of high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test and evaluations of seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts.

Subaru had the most Safety Pick+ vehicles. Hyundai, also the owner of the Kia and Genesis brands, produced six models earning the top award, while Subaru has four, the IIHS said in announcing its annual list. It's similar to the existing small front overlap test, a rigorous evaluation that crashes a vehicle into a barrier at 40 miles per hour with just 25 percent of the driver-side front end striking the obstacle. "Manufacturers have been taking this issue seriously since we first shed light on it, and we're confident that good small overlap protection will become the norm on the passenger side, just as it has on the driver side".

"We've been doing small overlap frontal crash tests on the driver's side since 2012 and we've seen a lot of improvement on that side, but we weren't seeing that kind of improvement for passengers, said IIHS president Adrian Lund".

Headlights weren't factored in for the 2017 Top Safety Pick, and an acceptable headlight rating was enough to bump a 2017 award victor into the "plus" category. Check out the full list of models that qualify.

IIHS has been recognizing vehicles with the Top Safety Pick rating since 2006.

"Automakers have really come to grips with the fact that safety is an important component of consumer choice, and they are working hard to meet the criteria", Lund said, USA Today reported.
