An Air New Zealand aircraft made an unscheduled landing last night after circling Tauranga and an area of ocean east of the Coromandel.

In a statement released today the Transport Accident Investigation Commission say they've opened inquiries into both events, with investigators having been on the ground in Auckland since Tuesday. "But the damage sustained on Tuesday suggests an engine part has travelled through the engine".

Pictures supplied to Newsroom.co.nz show damage to the turbine blades on one of the plane's Rolls Royce engines.

Tan Kai Ping, Singapore Airlines' senior vice president, marketing planning, said: "Our alliance with Air New Zealand has already benefited customers through more capacity, choice, improved connections and more codeshare destinations". It listed changes until Sunday.

Under their joint venture alliance that took effect in January 2015, the two airlines will continue to operate one daily return service each on the Singapore-Auckland route, with a third service operated by Singapore Airlines during the Northern Winter season and Air New Zealand during the Northern Summer season. "We finalised the schedule changes for Friday through to Sunday early [Thursday] afternoon and began the process of contacting customers".

TAIC is working closely with the airline, Civil Aviation Authority and engine-manufacturer Rolls Royce. An Air Asia A330 returned to base after severe in-flight shaking in August.

Rolls-Royce did not have spare engines available while the maintenance work was being undertaken, Air New Zealand said in an announcement to the stock exchange.

An investigation is underway after two Air NZ Dreamliner airplanes experienced engine abnormalities this week.

Air New Zealand has been forced to ground some of its worldwide flights after revealing some of the Rolls-Royce engines mounted had to be inspected.
