Valdez and White will likely become the frontrunners for the Democratic primary. Her statement drew harsh criticism from Governor Abbott who said, "sanctuary city policies like those promoted by your recent decision to implement your own case-by-case immigrant detention plan will no longer be tolerated in Texas".

"Like so many hardworking Texans, I know it's tough deciding between buying food, finding a decent place to live, and setting aside money for college tuition". "Opportunity in Texas ought to be as big as this great state, but it is out of reach for far too many, that's why I'm running for Texas Governor".

"I'm stepping up for Texas, for everyone's fair shot to get ahead, I'm in", Valdez said.

Valdez announced her campaign for governor in Austin on Wednesday, telling reporters that she had submitted her resignation as sheriff.

After attaining the rank of captain in the U.S. Army, Valdez went on to work as a federal agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and, later, the Department of Homeland Security, focusing on fraud and drug cases for nearly 30 years before being elected sheriff of Dallas County, the state's second most populous county. Abbott has no serious GOP challenger.

In 2016, Valdez gave a Thursday night, prime-time speech at the Democratic National Convention, introducing the families of several police officers killed on the job. She was Texas' first openly gay sheriff and has publicly clashed with Abbott over her handling of federal immigration detainers in the nation's seventh-largest jail system.

And those are some of the reasons why Valdez says, "She's in".

Once that happens, she will officially join the other six Democrats who have already launched bids for the party's gubernatorial nomination.

Texas Democrats have faced uncomfortable questions for months about whether they can field a credible gubernatorial candidate. She's the only Democratic candidate that is now an elected official, and is the most well-known of the seven Democratic challengers Abbott is facing so far.

He remains popular among social conservatives who drive Texas politics and is steering the state through the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which could become the costliest national disaster cleanup in USA history. The debate resurfaced in 2017, and was ultimately the driving force behind the anti-"sanctuary cities" and immigration enforcement bill Abbott signed into law earlier this year.

Valdez must resign as sheriff to challenge Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott. She'll be an underdog in Texas, which hasn't elected a Democrat to a statewide office since 1994.
