Why Amazon and Google just can't get along

Apple Inc., meantime, said Amazon Prime Video would become available as an app for Apple TV by the end of the year, but it hasn't yet been released.

Yesterday the two companies announced that - finally - that very app had now gone live, with Vice President of Prime Video Mark Eamer saying in a statement: "There is nothing that excites us more than delighting our customers, and we are THRILLED for them to stream Prime Video on Apple TV". It's a move borne of a protracted turf war between the two titans; one that also will continue to have ripple effects on third-party alliances (like Amazon's deal with Apple TV) until there's some kind of resolution. Amazon's decision of not selling the Google Chromecast and Apple TV (both of which have dedicated YouTube apps) has further strained the relation between Google and Amazon.

Why such good news for Apple TV owners, and such bad news for Fire TV and Chromecast owners? This is accessed via the Movies, TV and Music apps on the Apple TV 4K's homepage. Google has already made its intentions clear by blocking YouTube access from the Amazon Echo Show which is now being sold in the United States and can be described as an Alexa equipped Echo speaker with a 7inch display. That includes Google's Chromecast, a streaming device that's cheap but slightly tricky to use, since you have to start the video on your iPhone or Android phone and then switch the stream to the TV. Amazon's high-end Echo Show has a screen that can display video.

YouTube might soon disappear from your Amazon streaming device. Nest being a sister company to Google that makes various net-connected gizmos.

- Watch on your Apple TV directly by downloading the separate tvOS app (requires Apple TV 3rd generation or later).

Tech firms have their own way of engaging in a fight.

Amazon said in a statement, "Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website".

Google pulled YouTube from the Echo Show in September, saying that the way Amazon had implemented YouTube didn't comply with Google's terms of service. As of time of writing, the product was not listed on Amazon.

These kinds of disputes can be confusing for consumers who probably just want to watch the things they like on the devices they've bought.
